Exclusive Asylum Excerpt
This is one of my favorite scenes. Chase and the Ghosts learn of his wife's death. I love the camaraderie between the characters.
“Son,” Redic interrupted firmly, “I need a moment with Chase.”
“Sure, Dad. We’ll talk more in a bit, Chase,” Seraph said, nodding toward Chase as he walked to Cam and Brax. Stu and Sterling had disappeared. Cam greeted Seraph with the customary handshake as the three of them stood together watching Redic and Chase. Seraph’s heart sank as he saw the color drain from Chase’s cheeks. Blast the Legacy. What had they done? Redic squeezed Chase’s shoulder as he gestured for Seraph to join them again. Seraph and the others moved in quickly, surrounding their friend. Redic and Remy slipped away silently. “Chase?” Seraph said, reaching out to touch his friend’s elbow. Chase stared straight ahead at the floor in front of him. Gone was the puzzled, fearful look. He was obviously in total shock. “She was pronounced dead early this morning.” “Chase, I’m sorry,” Cam whispered as Brax gasped in disbelief. “Did they …?” Seraph started to ask, but couldn’t bring himself to finish. “Lethal injection,” Chase choked out. Seraph closed his eyes, biting his lip to swallow a curse. Trista hadn’t even been granted a trial. The Legacy had been in the regular practice of trying all criminals, but it seemed now that they were foregoing such courtesies. How far would things go before they eliminated that process altogether? “Excuse me,” Chase mumbled, darting past the small group of men. Cam set off after him, but Seraph grabbed his arm. “He needs to be alone. He’s not going anywhere. I’ll find him in a little while.” “This can’t go on. They are going to whittle away at us until there are none left,” Brax murmured. “That’s exactly what they are trying to do, Brax. And they’ve done far more damage with this than they ever hoped,” Seraph replied, his eyes following Chase. “Far more.” |
